Consulting Shoulder Design Surgeon - Mark Frankle, M.D.

Dr. Frankle One of DJO Surgical’s leading and most influential key design surgeons is Mark A. Frankle, M.D. in Tampa, FL. He was the co-designing surgeon for the Foundation ® Fracture Total Shoulder System and is currently leading the design and development for the Reverse® Shoulder Prosthesis.

Dr. Frankle attended medical school at Rush Medical College; and completed his internship and residency at the University of South Florida. He completed a fellowship training in orthopedic pathology and research at Rush Medical College; an experimental surgery research fellowship under the direction of Stephen Perren, M.D. at the prestigious A/O-ASIF in Davos, Switzerland; and also a shoulder, elbow and adult reconstruction fellowship under the direction of Robert Cofield, M.D. and Bernie Morrey, M.D. at the Mayo Clinic.

Currently, Dr. Frankle has served on staff at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa, FL since 1992; and specializes in adult reconstruction and arthritis with a special clinical interest in shoulder and elbow injuries. He is also the director of the shoulder and elbow fellowship program and the biomechanical shoulder and elbow research laboratory at the University of South Florida College of Engineering. In addition, he has also served as the clinical assistant professor, division of orthopedic surgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, FL since 1992.

Dr. Frankle is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications in professional journals; and maintains ongoing involvement in research grant projects as well as the design for shoulder arthroplasty systems. In March 2001, Dr. Frankle was awarded the prestigious Charles S. Neer Award in the Basic Science category and selected as one of “America’s Top Surgeons” in 2004/2005. He was recently the course director for the 2nd International Symposium on the Treatment of Complex Shoulder Problems and presented on the basic science, clinical experience, and biomechanics of the Reverse Shoulder Prosthesis.

Dr. Frankle is very passionate about providing the best clinical outcomes for his patient population and welcomes surgeon visitations at Tampa General Hospital by appointment only.
